Ivan KovacがDirectorとCinematographyを務めた 『MITANI – The Mariage of Sushi』が、世界三大映画祭（カンヌ、ヴェネツィア、ベルリン）に次ぐ高い格式と歴史を誇るサン・セバスチャン国際映画祭にて、世界初公開されることが発表されました。本作は、予約4年待ち、わずか6席の隠れ家高級寿司店「三谷」、その店主である伝説の鮨職人・三谷康彦に密着。厨房という極限の現場に立つ彼の哲学と美学を克明に捉えるとともに、彼が挑む究極の挑戦——多様な文化が交差するアメリカ・ニューヨークの舞台で、自らの比類なき料理芸術を披露する軌跡に迫る長編ドキュメンタリー作品です。三谷氏の代名詞ともいえる「マリアージュ（The Mariage）」には、素材の熟成、温度、そして香りの余韻に至るまで、一切の妥協を許さず緻密に追求する彼独自の美学が凝縮されています。その根底にあるのは、「命の循環」という日本固有の自然観と精神性。海や大地の恵み、命あるすべての食材への深い畏敬と感謝を一貫の鮨へと昇華させていく三谷氏の仕事を、半年以上にわたる取材と撮影を通して記録しました。厨房での仕事から、ニューヨークの舞台で新たな挑戦に挑む姿まで。三谷氏の仕事、その哲学、そして食材に宿る「命」と向き合う姿を映像に刻み込み、ひとつの作品として完成させました。その作品がいよいよ世界初公開を迎えます。

It has been announced that “MITANI – The Mariage of Sushi”, directed and shot by Ivan Kovac, will have its world premiere at the San Sebastian International Film Festival, which boasts a prestigious history and status second only to the world’s three major film festivals (Cannes, Venice and Berlin). The films focus on “Mitani”, a hidden gem with a four-year waiting list and only six seats available by reservation, and its owner, the legendary sushi chef Yasuhiko Mitani. This feature-length documentary captures his philosophy and aesthetic sensibilities as he works in the grueling environment of the kitchen, while tracing his journey as he takes on the ultimate challenge of showcasing the unparalleled artistry of his cuisine on the stage of New York, where diverse cultures intersect. “The Mariage”, which has become synonymous with Mr. Mitani, embodies his unique aesthetic, a meticulous pursuit that allows for absolutely no compromise, from the aging of ingredients and temperature to the lingering aroma. Underlying all of this is Japan’s unique view of nature and spirituality, known as the “cycle of life”. Through more than half a year of interviews and filming, we documented Mr. Mitani’s work, in which he transforms his deep reverence and gratitude for the bounty of the sea and land and for all living ingredients into a harmonious sushi experience. From his work in the kitchen to his pursuit of new challenges on the New York stage, we have captured Mr. Mitani’s craft, his philosophy, and his engagement with the “life” inherent in ingredients on film, crafting it into a single work of art. That work is finally set to make its world premiere.
